Gavin Newsom Eyes 2028 Presidential Run
California Governor Gavin Newsom signaled he might run for president in 2028, but said his focus remains on the 2026 midterm elections. In a Sunday interview, Newsom told CBS’ Sunday Morning that a presidential run is a real possibility. “Yeah, I’d be lying otherwise,” he said. “I can’t do that.”
Newsom emphasized that Democrats winning the 2026 midterms is key to reshaping national politics. He argued that success would end former President Donald Trump’s influence and rebalance government power. “Finally, you have a coequal branch of government beginning to assert itself,” Newsom said. He warned that if Republicans keep control, it could lead to what he called a “third term of President Trump.”
The governor highlighted his work on California’s Proposition 50 ballot measure. The initiative would allow California to control congressional redistricting, countering Republican efforts in other states. Newsom also addressed recent efforts to strengthen Democratic influence. He stressed that reclaiming the House of Representatives is a top priority before thinking about the White House.
Newsom is among several Democrats mentioned as potential 2028 candidates. Former Vice President Kamala Harris recently said she might run again. Other likely contenders include Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
In recent months, Newsom has criticized Trump’s actions, especially federal deployments and ICE raids in California. His social media team has drawn attention by mocking Trump’s posts with AI-generated memes and playful attacks. Newsom also launched “The Patriot Shop” in August, featuring merchandise inspired by Trump’s MAGA branding. Some items included satirical references, such as a “SOLD OUT” Bible, echoing Trump’s religious-themed promotions.
Newsom has expanded his audience beyond traditional Democratic circles. In March, he debuted a podcast called “This is Gavin Newsom.” Notable episodes included conversations with conservative figures, such as the late Charlie Kirk and former Trump adviser Steve Bannon. These appearances aim to broaden his appeal to a wider political audience.
When asked if he has a personal reason to run for president, Newsom deferred to faith. “Faith will determine that,” he said, leaving the door open for a potential campaign after the midterms.
