Petition Seeks Melania Trump's Deportation
A petition calling for the deportation of former First Lady Melania Trump, her parents, and her son Barron has gathered more than 13,700 signatures as of Saturday. The campaign comes amid ongoing discussions about President Donald Trump’s immigration policies.
Titled "Deport Melania, Melania's parents and Barron in the first round of deportations!", the online petition was launched earlier this year on the MoveOn platform. It urges authorities to include the former first lady and her family in deportation actions, citing what petitioners describe as fairness under Trump’s immigration enforcement agenda.
The petition argues that if the government targets naturalized citizens for deportation, Melania and her parents should also be subject to the same rules. It refers to Barron Trump as an "anchor baby," claiming he should be deported because of his maternal grandmother’s foreign birth. Petitioners stated, "If it’s good for one, it’s good for all! There should be no exceptions! On the first boat or flight out!" The campaign also frames the measure as a demonstration that immigration enforcement is about national security rather than favoritism.
The petition gained its first 50 signatures on June 29, 2025, quickly reaching 10,000 by July 8. As of this week, it has 13,725 supporters, nearing its goal of 15,000 signatures.
MoveOn, which hosts petitions but does not necessarily endorse them, reviewed the submission and chose not to promote it further. The group stated, "This petition either may not reflect MoveOn members' progressive values, or MoveOn members may disagree about whether to support this petition." MoveOn Civic Action clarified that it does not automatically endorse petition content posted on its platform.
Melania Trump was born in Slovenia in 1970 and moved to New York in 1996. She became a naturalized US citizen a decade later, making her the second first lady born outside the United States and the first to become a naturalized citizen. Her early immigration status has faced scrutiny, particularly regarding whether she maintained legal status before receiving a green card in 2001.
The debate over her immigration background has resurfaced periodically. Earlier in 2025, Congresswoman Maxine Waters called for Melania Trump’s deportation, urging scrutiny of her records. Waters argued that if the administration questioned citizenship for children born in the US to immigrant parents, it should first examine Melania’s background, citing her parents’ documentation.
The petition and surrounding discussions highlight the ongoing political tensions over immigration enforcement and the visibility of public figures in such debates. While the petition is approaching its goal, its real-world impact remains limited, and MoveOn has distanced itself from officially endorsing the campaign.
