Latino Voter Trends shift under Trump
A new report shows a sharp shift in how Latino voters see the current president. The study says most Latino adults now hold a negative view of his actions in office. This change comes less than one year after the election, where the same group showed strong signs of support. The new data shows that their view has moved in a very clear way. Many now say his policies hurt their daily lives and the lives of people close to them. This change in mood is key because Latinos are one of the fastest-growing groups in the country. One in every five people in the nation is Latino. Their votes matter a lot in every race, both local and national.
The new study says that 70% of Latinos disapprove of the way the president is doing his job. This is a major shift from the past election. During that vote, 48% of Latinos supported him, which was a very strong result for his campaign. It was also a big jump from his support level years earlier. Many experts said that this rise came from Latino men who liked his talk about the economy. Some also liked his simple messages on border policies at the time. Many did not think he was serious about talk of mass deportations. Some felt he would only target people with a record of crime. Early polls from that period also showed that many Latinos did not feel he was speaking about them at all when he talked about immigration.
The new study shows that this early trust did not last. A large share of Latinos now say his immigration plans hurt their community. About 65% do not like his approach to immigration. Many say the new raids are more harsh than what they were told. More people now say they fear that they or someone they know could face a deportation order. In March, 42% had this fear. Now, that number is 52%. Almost 60% say they have seen or heard about raids or arrests in their area in the last six months. Some past supporters have now spoken out in strong words. They say these actions feel unfair. Many now call them too harsh and not needed.
The new data also touches on the economy. The study says 61% of Latinos feel the president’s plans made the economy worse. This change comes after new tariffs and cuts in social aid moved into place. Many Latino families say these steps raised prices on key goods. Some say job cuts in local areas hurt their homes. Only a small share, about 10%, say that his actions helped them. That leaves 78% who believe that the policies harm their group. This is the first time in many years that most Latinos say their lives became worse under a president’s plans.
This shift also shows up in voting patterns that came after the election. In the most recent state races, many Latino voters moved back to the opposite party. The results in two key states show that many Latinos helped push wins for those running against the president’s party. This change shows that the group is not fixed to one side. Their support can shift fast when policies harm their homes or place extra stress on their daily lives.
The study also shows a large gap between Latinos based on who they voted for in the last election. Most Latinos who voted for the other main candidate do not like the president’s work. But among those who voted for him, views are mixed. A good share still approve of his work, but that number has also gone down. At the start of his term, 93% of his Latino voters approved of his work. Now that number stands at 81%. The drop shows that even some of his own voters have changed their minds as new policies took shape.
The new study paints a clear picture. Latinos are rethinking their trust in the president. Their views on the economy, on daily safety, and on immigration have all changed. The group is large. The group is young. The group is growing fast. These new views may shape the next major election in a very strong way.
