Afghan Suspect in US Guard Shooting
Authorities have identified the man suspected of shooting two National Guard members near the White House as an Afghan national. The suspect, 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, is in custody and was also injured during the incident. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
Lakanwal entered the United States under a Biden-era policy that allowed Afghans to relocate after the US withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021. He was admitted through the Operation Allies Welcome program, which resettled Afghans after the two-decade war, and was granted asylum earlier this year.
The shooting occurred near the Farragut West metro station in Washington, D.C. Officials say the suspect “came around the corner” and immediately opened fire on two National Guard members. Both victims, a man and a woman from West Virginia, were shot with a handgun and are in critical condition. Their names have not been released.
Bystanders recorded videos showing police and National Guard members subduing the suspect and providing medical aid to the victims. The footage circulated widely on social media.
Speaking from Palm Beach, Florida, former President Donald Trump described the attack as “an act of terror” and emphasized his anger over the incident. He criticized the immigration policies of the Biden administration, claiming the shooting was the result of insufficient vetting of Afghan arrivals.
Trump stated that Lakanwal was brought into the US in September 2021 under the Biden administration’s resettlement flights. He called for a review of all Afghan arrivals under the current policies and suggested stricter measures for any foreign nationals who do not “add benefit” to the country.
National Guard troops have been stationed in Washington, D.C., since August, following a declaration of a “crime emergency.” Approximately 2,375 troops are currently active in the capital. Trump announced that he directed an additional 500 members to be sent to the city after the shooting.
A recent court ruling by US District Judge Jia Cobb deemed part of the National Guard deployment likely unlawful, but the order will not take effect until next month. The Trump administration is appealing the ruling.
Law enforcement continues to investigate the shooting. Officials have confirmed that Lakanwal was shot and apprehended at the scene. Authorities are reviewing the suspect’s background, his entry to the US, and the circumstances leading to the attack.
The shooting has reignited debate over immigration policies and vetting procedures for asylum seekers from Afghanistan. It also raises questions about the presence and deployment of National Guard forces in the capital. Officials urge anyone with information or footage of the incident to come forward. The investigation is ongoing, and updates are expected as authorities review evidence and interview witnesses.
