8 Arrested as Trump Officials Target Minneapolis Protesters
Eight people were arrested outside a federal building in Minneapolis on Tuesday amid clashes between protesters and federal immigration agents. Demonstrators gathered to protest the continued presence of ICE officers after a federal agent killed Minneapolis mother Renee Nicole Good last week.
Protesters were met with teargas, pepper balls, and flash bangs, while online Trump administration officials warned that city and state officials interfering with federal operations could face legal consequences. Stephen Miller, deputy chief of staff, said anyone crossing into “criminal conspiracy against the United States or ICE officers” would face justice.
The Department of Homeland Security has deployed thousands of agents to the area, including 800 Customs and Border Protection personnel and 2,000 ICE officers. Military lawyers are also being sent to assist with prosecutions, according to reports.
Minnesota, Minneapolis, and St. Paul have filed lawsuits calling the federal actions a “federal invasion” and claiming violations of First Amendment rights and other constitutional protections. Mayor Jacob Frey called the operation a “tremendous impact on day-to-day life,” while protests continued despite legal and physical threats.
Residents reported gas clouds, unmarked vehicles, and armed agents patrolling neighborhoods. Students in Brooklyn Park and other communities staged walkouts in protest. DHS claims more than 2,000 arrests in the state since early December and defends the officer who killed Good, saying he acted in self-defense—a claim widely criticized by local officials and witnesses.
