UConn’s Sarah Strong Dominates College Basketball
Sarah Strong, the 6-foot-2 forward for UConn, is turning heads in women’s college basketball with her extraordinary skill and calm presence on the court. Just a sophomore, Strong is chasing her second NCAA championship in as many years with an undefeated team that has won 52 consecutive games dating back to last season. As a freshman, Strong made an immediate impact, scoring 114 points in the 2025 NCAA tournament—the most ever by a freshman—and thriving defensively. This season, she has grown even more dominant, averaging 18.4 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 3.3 steals per game while shooting 60% from the field. Her performance earned her both Big East Player of the Year and Big East Defensive Player of the Year honors. She is also the favorite to win the National Player of the Year award next month. “What makes her unique is her ability to play like a guard and play like a big guy,” UConn coach Geno Auriemma said. “There are players who can get 20 points a game and 20 rebounds a game, but I’m not sure there’s a player other than Sarah who can do both.” Unlike other high-profile players, Strong’s approach is understated. Where players like Caitlin Clark play with swagger and Azzi Fudd cultivates a public persona, Strong lets her game speak for itself. She gives concise interviews and prefers to remain focused on basketball, despite increasing media attention, including an appearance on Good Morning America. At just 20 years old, her poise is remarkable. Strong’s foundation in basketball is deeply rooted in her family. Her mother, former WNBA All-Star Allison Feaster, played over a decade professionally in the WNBA and Europe before joining the Boston Celtics’ front office. Strong’s father, Danny Strong, also played professionally in Europe. Growing up in Europe, Strong was exposed to multiple languages and cultures, which helped her adapt quickly to new environments and challenges. Feaster and Danny Strong prioritized both basketball and well-rounded development for their daughter. She trained rigorously but also participated in activities like club soccer to maintain balance. Early on, she faced challenges learning English, but small class sizes and personalized attention helped her thrive academically. UConn recognized Strong’s talent early. Assistant coach Jamelle Elliott scouted her in ninth grade, and Auriemma quickly agreed with the assessment. “All you saw was this young kid who had a knack for doing the things that people have to learn to do—and she already had them,” he said. Her vision on the court, finishing ability, and composed style set her apart from the beginning. Strong attended Grace Christian School in Sanford, North Carolina, where she remained grounded and focused on enjoying basketball rather than chasing hype. Her development continued steadily, and by the time she committed to UConn in 2024, it was clear she could significantly impact the program. “Everyone gets better here,” Strong said, embracing the competitive culture of Storrs. UConn has a storied history of producing WNBA stars, including Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird, Maya Moore, Swin Cash, Rebecca Lobo, and Breanna Stewart. Taurasi even suggested Strong could be the best of them all. “She’s so smooth out there and full of grit and desire to win,” Taurasi said. Strong’s growing profile extends off the court as well. She has secured NIL deals with Jordan Brand, Unrivaled, and Madison Reed. On the court, she has scored 18 points in consecutive NCAA tournament wins, leading UConn into the Sweet 16 against North Carolina. With her combination of skill, poise, and grounding in family values, Sarah Strong is making college basketball stardom look effortless, setting the stage for a potential historic career at UConn and beyond.
