Tiger Woods Turns Down Ryder Cup Captaincy
Tiger Woods has declined the chance to captain the United States at the 2027 Ryder Cup, the PGA of America announced. The golf legend said he will step away from the sport to focus on his health and well-being after being charged with driving under the influence following a recent car accident.
A PGA statement said, “We commend Tiger for prioritising his long-term health and deeply respect the courage it takes to make such a personal decision. Tiger has shared with us that he will not serve as captain of the 2027 US Ryder Cup team and we support his decision.” Further updates on the Ryder Cup captaincy will be shared when appropriate.
The 15-time major winner had been the favourite to lead the US team at Adare Manor in Ireland, owned by his longtime friend JP McManus. Last Friday, Woods escaped unhurt after rolling his Land Rover while attempting to overtake a trailer. Police noted signs of impairment, and a search revealed two pills identified as hydrocodone, a prescription opioid. This was his fourth motoring incident since 2009.
Woods, 50, has undergone multiple surgeries throughout his career, especially to his leg and ankle following a serious 2021 crash. He now plans to enter a comprehensive inpatient treatment facility to address his health needs.
A Florida judge permitted Woods to leave the United States for treatment. Martin County Judge Darren Steele approved the motion filed by Woods’ attorney, Douglas Duncan, citing the need for an “intensive, highly individualised and medically integrated program” away from public scrutiny. The motion explained that ongoing media exposure and public attention would hinder Woods’ recovery and prevent him from fully engaging in treatment.
The PGA of America emphasised its support for Woods’ decision and praised him for prioritising his well-being over high-profile commitments. The 2027 Ryder Cup captaincy for the US team will now be reassessed, though no replacement has yet been announced.
This decision marks another pause in Woods’ storied career, highlighting the challenges he has faced with injuries and personal health. The focus on treatment abroad is expected to provide the superstar with the care and privacy needed to recover fully.
Tiger Woods’ withdrawal from the Ryder Cup comes as a shock to fans and the golfing community, who had anticipated his leadership in the prestigious event. The PGA and fellow golfers have expressed support for his choice to prioritise long-term health over public expectation.
Woods’ focus on recovery also underscores the ongoing difficulties elite athletes face in balancing high-level competition with physical and mental health. The Ryder Cup, one of golf’s most iconic tournaments, will proceed with a new captain for the US team, as Woods takes the time needed for his treatment program.
