Michigan Crushes Arizona for NCAA Final
Michigan overpowered Arizona from the start, turning Saturday night’s Final Four clash at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis into a one-sided 91-73 victory. Junior center Aday Mara scored a career-high 26 points with nine rebounds, while a limited Yaxel Lendeborg added 11 points in 14 minutes. The Wolverines extended their March Madness dominance, winning their fifth straight game by double digits and becoming the first team in the tournament to score over 90 points in five games.
Michigan (36-3) will face UConn (34-5) in Monday’s NCAA championship after the Huskies beat Illinois 71-62 in the earlier semifinal. UConn is seeking its third title in four seasons under coach Dan Hurley and seventh overall since 1999.
Both Michigan and Arizona entered the Final Four with the nation’s top defenses and top-five offenses, featuring numerous future NBA prospects. But it was the Wolverines who looked like professionals, taking a double-digit lead just five minutes into the game and dominating Arizona with swarming defense and fast breaks.
Koa Peat led the Wildcats (36-3) with 16 points and 11 rebounds, but Arizona struggled offensively, shooting just 36% overall and 6 of 17 from three-point range. Turnovers and limited assists further hindered their effort, while Jaden Bradley fouled out early and finished with 13 points mostly in garbage time.
Meanwhile, UConn’s Tarris Reed Jr scored 17 points with 11 rebounds, and freshman Braylon Mullins added 15 points in their win over Illinois. Mullins, who hit a buzzer-beating three against Duke in the Sweet 16, also made a late catch-and-shoot three-pointer to seal the Huskies’ victory. Freshman Keaton Wagler scored 20 points for Illinois, helping the Fighting Illini reach their first Final Four since 2005. Mullins and Wagler became the first freshmen since Michael Jordan and Patrick Ewing in 1982 to each score over 15 points in a Final Four game.
UConn’s Alex Karaban struggled with 9 points on 1-of-8 shooting but contributed four rebounds and four assists. He is on track to potentially become the first player since John Wooden’s UCLA teams to win three NCAA titles, while matching Hurley’s brother Bobby with 18 March Madness victories.
Michigan and UConn now set up a title showdown between two of the tournament’s most consistent programs. The Huskies have not lost a tournament game past the opening weekend since 2009. A victory Monday would give UConn its eighth national championship, moving it past North Carolina into third place behind only UCLA and Kentucky.
