Michigan Wins First NCAA Title Since 1989
Michigan claimed its first NCAA men’s basketball championship in 34 years, outlasting UConn 69-63 in a tense, hard-fought final on Monday. The Wolverines struggled from long range but relied on grit and clutch plays to secure the national title.
Elliot Cadeau led Michigan with 19 points, including the team’s first three-pointer, which came 7:04 into the second half. Cadeau was later named Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four for his standout performance. Freshman Trey McKenney added the team’s second three-pointer with just 1:50 left, giving Michigan a critical nine-point lead and putting the game largely out of reach.
UConn refused to back down. Solo Ball banked in a three to cut Michigan’s lead to four with 37 seconds remaining, and Alex Karaban’s potential game-tying three missed with 17 seconds left. Michigan’s clutch free-throw shooting, finishing 25 of 28 from the line, sealed the victory for the Wolverines, who improved to 37-3 on the season.
Despite the win, Michigan faced challenges throughout the game. The Wolverines were 2-for-15 from three-point range and struggled without Yaxel Lendeborg at full strength. The graduate transfer from UAB, hindered by a knee and foot injury, scored 13 points on 4-for-13 shooting, but his teammates stepped up when it mattered most.
UConn’s bid to become the first team since John Wooden’s UCLA dynasty to win three titles in four seasons fell short. The Huskies struggled with shooting, making just 30.9% of their attempts, and fell into foul trouble. Braylon Mullins, who helped UConn reach the Final Four, finished 4-of-17 but hit a pair of late threes to keep the game competitive.
Coach Dan Hurley’s team fought hard, slowing the pace and forcing Michigan to grind for every point. However, Michigan’s resilience ultimately prevailed, allowing the Wolverines to celebrate their second national championship in program history—the first coming in 1989.
The game had a 1950s-style feel, with both teams playing tough, physical basketball and focusing on defense. Michigan, known for high-scoring tournament runs, did not reach 70 points in this final but demonstrated the toughness and poise needed to win a championship.
Michigan’s victory adds a historic chapter to the program, giving fans a title that even the famed Fab Five teams could not achieve. The win highlights the Wolverines’ balance of skill, determination, and teamwork, and cements their place among college basketball’s elite programs.
