Los Angeles Mayoral Race Heads To Runoff Vote
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass will advance to the November election after leading the primary vote. However, the race for the second spot remains too close to call. Bass received the highest number of votes in the city’s mayoral primary. Still, she failed to secure more than 50 percent support. Under election rules, this means the contest will move to a runoff election later this year. As vote counting continued on Wednesday, Bass held a strong lead. The battle for second place remained between Spencer Pratt and Nithya Raman. More ballots are still being counted across Los Angeles. Election officials said it could take several days or even weeks before all votes are processed. Many voters in California use mail ballots, and some ballots arrive after Election Day if they were mailed on time. Speaking to supporters after the election, Bass said she plans to continue working on key city issues. She highlighted homelessness and housing as major priorities. Bass said Los Angeles has made progress during her time in office and that more work remains ahead. The mayor also spoke about unity in the city. She referred to challenges faced over the past year and said residents have stayed together through difficult times. Bass became the first woman elected mayor of Los Angeles in 2022. Before becoming mayor, she served in both state and national politics. Her long public service career helped build strong support across the city. The former reality television personality gained attention during the final weeks of the race. His campaign videos and public appearances attracted large audiences online. Although the final vote count is not complete, Pratt appeared confident about his chances of reaching the runoff. Pratt has strongly criticized Bass over her handling of major city issues. He entered the race after losing his home during the deadly wildfires that struck parts of Los Angeles in early 2025. Supporters say Pratt brings a fresh perspective. Critics argue he lacks political experience. Pratt has responded by saying his experience comes from living in Los Angeles and witnessing the city's challenges firsthand. If Pratt reaches the runoff, he would face a difficult challenge in a city that has long favored Democratic candidates. City council member Nithya Raman remains in contention for the second runoff spot. Raman urged supporters to remain patient as election workers continue counting ballots. She thanked volunteers and voters for their efforts during the campaign. Raman said the movement built during the race would continue regardless of the final outcome. Raman first gained national attention after winning a city council seat in 2020. She has focused much of her campaign on housing development and affordability. She has also promoted policies aimed at reducing homelessness and improving oversight of city programs. Key Issues Shape Los Angeles Mayoral Race The next mayor of Los Angeles will face several major challenges. Homelessness remains one of the city's biggest concerns. Residents continue to demand faster action and long-term solutions. Housing affordability is another major issue. Many families struggle with rising rents and limited housing supply. The city is also working to recover from devastating wildfires that killed dozens of people and damaged communities. Rebuilding efforts have faced criticism from some residents who say progress has been slow. Economic concerns also remain important. City leaders are looking for ways to strengthen local industries and support job growth. Wildfires Continue To Influence Campaign Debate The deadly wildfires of January 2025 became a major issue during the campaign. Bass faced criticism because she was overseas when the fires began. Her absence sparked public debate and led to calls for her resignation. She later acknowledged that the trip was a mistake. Bass said she would not have traveled if she had known the full risk posed by the fire conditions. The controversy affected her approval ratings and remained a key issue throughout the election campaign. Despite criticism, Bass maintained support from many Democratic leaders and voters. As ballot counting continues, Los Angeles residents now wait to learn who will join Bass in the November runoff. The result will determine the final matchup in one of the city's most closely watched elections in recent years.
