California vote count DOJ sends federal observer US
US federal officials have sent a prosecutor to Los Angeles to watch ballot processing during the California vote count in the state’s primary election. The move comes as President Donald Trump raised claims of election fraud. State officials strongly deny these claims. The US Department of Justice confirmed that an assistant US attorney was sent to the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder office to observe ballot handling. The office said the visitor was briefed on public observation rules and joined a walkthrough of ballot processing. Earlier, Bill Essayli, the first assistant US attorney for the Central District of California, said his office and the FBI in Los Angeles have active election fraud investigations. He also said the state election system has serious structural problems. Three days after the vote, several primary races remain too close to call. Experts say counting will continue for days due to millions of mail ballots still being processed. In the governor race, Xavier Becerra advanced to the general election. He is a former US health official under Joe Biden. He will face either conservative commentator Steve Hilton or billionaire Tom Steyer for the second slot. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has already secured a place in the runoff. The second candidate is still unclear. It could be Spencer Pratt or city councillor Nithya Raman. Across California, about 3,606,128 ballots still need processing, according to state election officials. The law requires most counties to finish counting by June 15, although some ballots can be processed later. California Secretary of State Shirley Weber said election workers are counting every valid ballot carefully. She said the process focuses on accuracy and trust in results. Governor Gavin Newsom warned that delays can spread misinformation. He urged faster reporting and said election trust must be protected. His office also shared messages explaining why counting takes time. State lawmaker Marc Berman said claims of fraud were false. He said officials must focus on counting all valid ballots and protecting voter access. President Donald Trump said on Thursday that California’s vote count shows signs of cheating. He said federal agencies are reviewing the process, but provided no evidence. In several congressional races, results remain unclear. In one district, Republican Kevin Kiley is leading. Two other candidates are still close as ballots continue to be counted. The county registrar said the federal visitor was part of a public observation program. The goal is to allow transparency in ballot handling. Officials said observers do not interfere with counting and only watch procedures inside the processing center. Election experts say California’s system often takes longer because of mail voting. Ballots arrive after election day and must be verified. This process is designed to ensure accuracy over speed. Officials also said the large number of remaining ballots is normal for a state of this size. California has millions of voters, and processing takes time across all counties. State officials have urged the public to wait for certified results. They warned that early claims based on partial counts can be misleading and may spread confusion online. The governor’s office said it understands public frustration with slow updates. But it said accuracy is more important than speed in democratic elections. Observers expect final results to take several more days. Some ballots, including late mail-in votes, can still be counted after initial deadlines under state law. Earlier, Governor Gavin Newsom’s team said delays in vote counting can fuel false claims online. They pointed to past elections where incomplete results were misused to spread conspiracy theories. Officials said clear communication is important during the counting period. Lawmaker Marc Berman said the state has improved counting laws. He said counties now have shorter deadlines compared to past years. He argued this improves transparency and keeps voters informed while protecting ballot accuracy. With many races still undecided, both parties are waiting for final certified results. Officials say every valid vote will be included before winners are confirmed.
