A’ja Wilson’s Heroic Shot Secures Aces Victory
A’ja Wilson delivered a moment to remember on Wednesday night, lifting the Las Vegas Aces to a thrilling 90-88 win over the Phoenix Mercury in Game 3 of the WNBA Finals. With just 0.3 seconds left, Wilson’s seven-foot fadeaway jumper sealed the victory and brought the Aces within one win of another championship.
Wilson led the game with 34 points and 14 rebounds, pushing Las Vegas to a 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven series. A win in Game 4, also set in Phoenix on Friday, would give the Aces their third WNBA title in just four seasons.
The final minute was filled with drama. After DeWanna Bonner tied the game at 88 with two free throws, Chelsea Gray fed Wilson in the post. Wilson spun left, rose over Alyssa Thomas, and nailed the game-winner from the lane’s left side. Phoenix still had a final shot, but Bonner’s jumper from the foul line missed as time expired.
Wilson’s strong performance also made history. Her total of 291 points this postseason broke the record for the most points in a single WNBA playoff run. Across 11 postseason games, she has averaged over 26 points per game, showing why she’s one of the league’s biggest stars.
Jackie Young added 21 points for Las Vegas, while Jewell Loyd had 16 and Gray finished with 11 points, five assists, three steals, and three blocks. The Aces dominated from long range, hitting 56% of their three-pointers, and never once fell behind in the game. Their defense stood tall too, recording eight blocks.
Las Vegas came out hot in the first quarter, starting with a 17-0 run midway through. Loyd fueled the surge with four three-pointers in under two minutes. But Phoenix quickly responded with a 13-0 run of their own to tie the game at 21 before Las Vegas edged ahead 26-23 by the end of the quarter.
By halftime, the Aces had stretched their lead to 55-43, making nine of their 16 three-point attempts in the first half. Wilson took control in the third quarter, scoring nine consecutive points to build a 68-52 lead. Loyd’s late free throws in the third made it 76-59, marking the largest lead of the night for Las Vegas.
Phoenix refused to go quietly, mounting a fierce fourth-quarter comeback. Kahleah Copper scored 11 straight points during a 29-14 rally that brought the Mercury back into the contest. Bonner then hit a deep three-pointer to tie the game at 86 with just over a minute and a half remaining. Gray’s layup briefly put Las Vegas back on top before Bonner’s free throws tied it again, setting up Wilson’s decisive moment.
Bonner led the Mercury with 25 points, while Satou Sabally added 24 before exiting with a head injury late in the fourth quarter. Thomas nearly recorded a triple-double with 14 points, 12 rebounds, and nine assists. Copper contributed 17 points, with 11 coming during the late surge that nearly stole the win.
The Aces’ victory continues a remarkable run for the defending champions. Their balanced offense, sharp shooting, and Wilson’s dominance have kept them in control throughout the finals. One more win would not only secure another title but also further establish the Aces as one of the greatest teams in recent WNBA history.
As Game 4 approaches, all eyes will be on Wilson and her teammates to see if they can finish the job in Phoenix and claim back-to-back championships.
