Rebel Wilson Defamation Case in Sydney Court Trial
Hollywood actress Rebel Wilson has strongly denied claims that she bullied women on the set of her film, calling the allegations “absolute nonsense” as she gave evidence in a high-profile defamation case in Sydney. The case has drawn wide public attention as it involves serious accusations, social media posts, and disputes over what was said during filming.
Wilson, best known for her role in Bridesmaids and other major comedy films, is being sued by Australian actress Charlotte MacInnes. The dispute is linked to Wilson’s directorial debut film The Deb. MacInnes claims Wilson damaged her reputation through Instagram posts made in 2024 and 2025. She argues that Wilson falsely described her as a liar after she raised concerns about alleged sexual harassment involving producer Amanda Ghost. MacInnes denies ever making such a formal complaint.
During the court hearing, prosecutors asked Wilson if she saw herself as a “champion of women.” Wilson answered yes without hesitation. The courtroom was full, with journalists, supporters, and witnesses, including producer Amanda Ghost, present during the proceedings. The atmosphere was described as tense as cross-examination began.
Lawyers representing MacInnes questioned Wilson closely about her public statements and her treatment of women involved in the film. Wilson was accused of mistreating MacInnes, Ghost, and a female writer while at the same time claiming to support women. Wilson rejected this claim firmly, saying it was “absolute nonsense.” She also said that any public comments she made were based on truth and could not be considered mistreatment.
The court heard that Wilson often said she could not remember specific details when questioned. She also denied having any involvement in websites that allegedly spread rumours about MacInnes and Ghost. At one point, she was questioned about past public backlash in 2018, when she referred to herself as the “first ever plus-sized girl” to star in a romantic comedy. Wilson said she could not recall the reaction clearly.
The case also focuses on an incident that happened in September 2023 at Bondi Beach. MacInnes and producer Amanda Ghost reportedly went swimming when Ghost experienced a strong allergic reaction to cold water. She developed visible symptoms and began shaking, according to court statements presented earlier.
After the incident, both women returned to Ghost’s apartment. MacInnes reportedly helped run a bath to warm Ghost up, and later joined her in the bath while both were wearing swimsuits. Ghost’s assistant also briefly entered the bathroom with hot drinks, and they had a short conversation.
Wilson’s legal defence relies partly on the claim that she told the truth in her social media posts. However, both sides disagree on what MacInnes told Wilson about the bath incident. Wilson says MacInnes described feeling “uncomfortable,” while MacInnes says she only described it as “weird” or “strange and bizarre,” not distressing.
Court documents also show messages sent by Wilson to Ghost. In those messages, Wilson said MacInnes had “zero issues” with the situation and that she described it as simply strange. This communication is now part of the dispute over what was actually said.
MacInnes claims Wilson misrepresented the incident and damaged her career. She also says her relationship with Wilson became worse during filming. MacInnes is seeking damages and wants to stop Wilson from repeating the claims online.
Wilson’s legal team argues that MacInnes’s career has not been harmed. They say she later secured a record deal and other professional work, including a role in a US theatre production linked to Ghost.
Earlier court claims also included serious allegations from prosecutors that Wilson was linked to efforts to create online content targeting Ghost. Another issue raised involved the leaking of a private image of MacInnes after her social media accounts were hacked.
Wilson is expected to continue giving evidence as the case develops, with more testimony scheduled in the coming days. The court will continue examining what was said, what was posted online, and whether any statements caused harm to MacInnes’s reputation.
