Tech Billionaires Fashion Influence Sparks Backlash
The growing relationship between powerful tech billionaires and the fashion world is facing sharp criticism after the 2026 Met Gala sparked major backlash in New York. The event, one of the biggest nights in fashion, became the center of protests after reports revealed that Jeff Bezos and his wife Lauren Sánchez Bezos helped fund the gala with a reported $10 million sponsorship. Critics accused the fashion industry of becoming too close to wealthy tech leaders while many workers struggle with rising living costs and job losses. The Met Gala has long been known for luxury, celebrity culture, and extreme fashion. However, this year’s event created a deeper political and cultural debate about money, power, and influence inside the fashion world. At the center of the controversy was the public support shown toward the Bezoses during the event. Fashion leader Anna Wintour praised the couple during a press conference and thanked them for giving back to the arts. Outside the museum, however, protesters gathered to criticize Amazon and its labor practices. Activist groups projected interviews with unhappy Amazon workers onto the side of Bezos’s Manhattan building. Protesters also handed out fake urine containers to highlight complaints from drivers who said they faced harsh working conditions. Some people inside the fashion industry also spoke against the partnership. Former Vogue editor Gabriella Karefa-Johnson helped organize a rival event called “Ball Without Billionaires.” The alternative gathering featured Amazon workers instead of celebrities and luxury fashion stars. Karefa-Johnson later said fashion often helps powerful people improve their image by surrounding them with glamour and celebrity attention. The controversy grew even larger after the release of The Devil Wears Prada 2. The movie features a fictional tech billionaire trying to take control of a fashion magazine using money and artificial intelligence. Many viewers noticed similarities between the fictional character and Bezos. The story also explores fears that technology and wealthy investors could reshape fashion media and reduce the role of creative workers. The timing of the film added to the growing public debate over the influence of Silicon Valley inside fashion, entertainment, and media. Fashion experts say the industry is becoming more dependent on wealthy tech figures because luxury brands are facing financial pressure. Several major companies have announced job cuts and store closures over the past year. As traditional luxury spending slows, billionaires from the tech industry are becoming important financial partners for major fashion events and publications. This year’s Met Gala reportedly raised $42 million. Ticket prices reached around $100,000, much higher than only a few years ago. The guest list also reflected the changing balance of power, with tech leaders such as Mark Zuckerberg and Sergey Brin attending the event. Critics questioned whether these tech executives truly care about preserving fashion history or whether they are mainly seeking status and cultural influence. Some insiders also expressed concern that celebrities continued attending the gala despite the public backlash. Stars including Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, Beyoncé, and Nicole Kidman appeared at the event. Only a small number of celebrities publicly criticized Amazon during the controversy. Still, many fashion workers admitted they felt trapped. Some said they disliked the growing influence of billionaires but could not afford to reject opportunities connected to major events like the Met Gala. Young designers also worried that fashion is becoming more focused on wealth and publicity than creativity. At the same time, experts believe the relationship between fashion and tech billionaires will likely continue growing. Wealthy clients play a major role in luxury fashion sales, and media companies increasingly rely on partnerships with large corporations. Some analysts also believe tech leaders want acceptance from elite cultural circles. Public appearances at major fashion events help build that image. The future of the Met Gala itself may also change. Leaders at the Costume Institute recently suggested the organization hopes to become less dependent on the yearly fundraiser in the future. For now, however, the debate continues. The 2026 Met Gala may be remembered not only for celebrity outfits but also for exposing growing tension between fashion workers, powerful billionaires, and the business interests shaping modern culture.
