Trump ICE Director Pick Sparks New Debate
President Donald Trump has announced that he plans to nominate Lance Schroyer as the next director of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The announcement came on Saturday through a post on Truth Social. If confirmed by the Senate, Schroyer will replace David Venturella, who has been serving as the acting head of the agency.
Trump praised Schroyer and highlighted his long career in law enforcement. He said Schroyer has more than 29 years of experience in Oklahoma. He also noted that Schroyer served as an Oklahoma State Trooper and as a member of the United States Marine Corps.
The president described Schroyer as a strong leader with years of operational work. Trump said Schroyer has experience working to remove people who were living in the United States without legal permission. He also said Schroyer has handled major law enforcement operations during his career.
The Department of Homeland Security also welcomed the nomination. Secretary Markwayne Mullin said Schroyer would play an important role in carrying out the administration's immigration goals. He said the new nominee has worked closely with state and federal law enforcement agencies and has experience leading large operations.
Mullin pointed to Schroyer's work under the 287(g) program. The program allows selected state and local law enforcement officers to assist with certain federal immigration enforcement duties after receiving training and approval from ICE.
Both Trump and Mullin asked the Senate to move quickly on the nomination. Mullin noted that the Senate has not confirmed an ICE director in more than a decade. The agency has operated under acting leaders since early 2017.
Immigration remains one of the main priorities of the Trump administration. Since returning to office last year, Trump has promised stronger border security and faster action against illegal immigration. His administration has increased immigration arrests and deportation efforts across the country.
ICE has played a central role in carrying out these policies. The agency has expanded detention operations and increased efforts to remove people who do not have legal permission to remain in the United States. Administration officials say these actions are aimed at improving public safety and enforcing immigration law.
Trump also claimed that his administration has reached record daily arrest numbers through ICE and US Customs and Border Protection. He said Schroyer has the skills needed to increase efforts against people accused of serious crimes, including murder, rape, and drug trafficking. The president said the administration wants to remove dangerous offenders from American communities.
Supporters of the administration say stronger immigration enforcement helps protect national security and reduce illegal border crossings. They argue that experienced leaders are needed to manage large enforcement operations and support cooperation between federal, state, and local agencies.
However, immigration rights groups continue to raise concerns. They argue that some enforcement actions may affect civil liberties and create fear among immigrant communities. Critics also say aggressive immigration operations can increase anxiety for ethnic minority groups and families with mixed immigration status.
Public debate over immigration policy has remained strong throughout Trump's presidency. Supporters and critics continue to disagree on the balance between border security, public safety, and the rights of immigrants.
The Senate will now decide whether to confirm Schroyer as the permanent leader of ICE. Lawmakers are expected to review his experience, leadership record, and plans for the agency before holding a confirmation vote.
If confirmed, Schroyer will take charge of one of the nation's largest federal law enforcement agencies during a time when immigration policy remains one of the most closely watched issues in American politics. His leadership could shape future enforcement efforts and influence how the administration carries out its immigration agenda in the years ahead.
