United Airlines ICE Threat Sparks Review After Viral Airport Video
United Airlines is reviewing a viral video that shows one of its employees making a comment about calling Immigration and Customs Enforcement during a customer dispute at San Francisco International Airport.
The incident happened last week after a family faced a ticket problem before a flight to Canada. The video spread quickly on social media and started a wider discussion about customer service, workplace behavior, and respect for travelers.
The passenger involved is Julio Varela, a naturalized United States citizen from San Ramon, California. He said the problem began when his family entered his daughter's name incorrectly while booking airline tickets. The mistake required a correction before the family could travel.
According to Varela, the family waited about three hours while airline staff worked on the issue. He became frustrated because the process took much longer than expected. He said the long delay increased stress for everyone traveling with him.
As the wait continued, the conversation between Varela and an airline employee became tense. Feeling unhappy with the service, Varela took out his phone and started recording the exchange.
During the video, Varela asked the employee to identify herself. He said he wanted her name so he could file a complaint about how she handled the situation.
The employee also began recording the interaction with her own phone. During the exchange, she made a comment suggesting that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) should be called.
She also said that Varela did not act like a citizen. The remark immediately changed the tone of the conversation and increased the disagreement between the two.
Varela responded by telling the employee to call ICE if she wanted to. He also reminded her that he was willing to stand by his position.
The discussion continued for several moments. Both sides raised their voices as the disagreement became more heated. Varela repeatedly asked the employee to repeat her statement.
The employee responded by asking him to step away from her. The exchange was recorded from both sides and later appeared on social media, where it gained millions of views and strong public attention.
In another part of the video, Varela criticized the employee's customer service and accused her of treating him unfairly. Another airline worker standing nearby could also be seen reacting during the incident.
After the video spread online, many people shared their opinions about the exchange. Some questioned the employee's comments and called for the airline to review what happened. Others discussed the challenges that airline workers and passengers can face during stressful travel situations.
United Airlines later released a short statement about the incident.
The airline said it is looking into the interaction shown in the video. It added that it has no additional information to share while the review is ongoing.
The company has not announced whether any disciplinary action has been taken. It also has not provided details about what steps will follow after the internal review.
Varela later shared another concern after the airport incident. Because of the employee's comment, he worried that he could face problems when returning to the United States after his trip to Montreal.
Although he is a naturalized American citizen, he said the comment left him feeling uneasy about reentering the country. He feared he might experience delays or extra questioning because of what happened.
However, Varela later said his return to the United States was normal. He reported that he was not stopped or detained by immigration officials after arriving home.
The incident has continued to draw attention online as people discuss customer service standards, respectful communication, and the impact of comments made during public interactions.
United Airlines has not released further updates since confirming that it is reviewing the matter. The outcome of that review has not yet been announced.
The viral video continues to circulate online while many people wait for additional information from the airline about its findings and any future action regarding the incident.
