The Kansas City Chiefs opened their first full-team training camp practice on Wednesday without offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy. Bieniemy remained away from the team as he stayed with his family following a shooting at his Virginia home last weekend. The incident left his wife, Mia Bieniemy, seriously injured and led to criminal charges against their son. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid shared a positive update after practice. He said Mia Bieniemy had been released from the intensive care unit and was continuing her recovery. “She’s making progress,” Reid said while speaking with reporters after the workout. The team has not announced when Eric Bieniemy will return to his coaching duties. Reid also said there is currently no timeline for his return. The situation has drawn attention across the NFL as the Chiefs continue preparations for the upcoming season. Bieniemy plays a key role in the team's offensive system and recently returned to Kansas City after coaching elsewhere in recent years. Authorities arrested Elijah Zion Bieniemy, the 27-year-old son of Eric and Mia Bieniemy, in connection with the shooting. According to law enforcement officials, he faces several charges. Those charges include malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharging a firearm inside a dwelling. Court records show that Elijah Bieniemy was being held without bond on Wednesday at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center in Virginia. A court hearing for motions is scheduled for Thursday. A preliminary hearing is expected to take place on August 31. The legal process is still in its early stages. Officials have not released additional details about the investigation. As the family deals with the situation, the Chiefs are continuing training camp activities without one of their most experienced coaches. Bieniemy returned to Kansas City earlier this year. His return brought back a coach who helped shape one of the NFL’s most successful offenses. During his previous time with the Chiefs, Bieniemy helped the franchise reach three Super Bowls. The team won two championships during that period. His success in Kansas City helped raise his profile around the league. In 2023, he left the Chiefs to become offensive coordinator of the Washington Commanders. The move gave him a chance to expand his experience and strengthen his resume for future head coaching opportunities. However, changes followed after that season. The coaching staff in Washington was dismissed, and Bieniemy later joined UCLA as offensive coordinator. After his time in college football, he spent last season working with the Chicago Bears as running backs coach.
