Michigan Water System Cyberattacks Under FBI Probe
Michigan officials have confirmed that nine water systems in the state were affected by cyberattacks, joining Minnesota, where more than 30 water systems recently reported similar incidents. Federal authorities, including the FBI, are investigating the attacks, while state officials say drinking water services remain safe.
The reports emerged after Michigan received a federal cyber alert on Tuesday. The alert warned of attempts to interfere with operational technology used by water utilities. Soon after receiving the warning, state officials began receiving reports from local communities that matched the activity described by federal agencies.
Dale George, communications director for the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, said nine water systems experienced activity linked to the alert. He emphasized that all affected systems continued operating safely.
According to state officials, local operators quickly addressed the issues. Michigan authorities said there are no known public health concerns connected to the incidents. Water quality and service remained stable throughout the reported events.
The FBI confirmed it is actively investigating the attacks. The agency has not publicly identified who is responsible. Federal officials have also not released details about how the systems were targeted.
In a statement, the FBI said it is aware of reports involving water and wastewater sectors and is working closely with federal partners to protect critical infrastructure. The agency added that it remains prepared to respond to a wide range of cyber threats.
The incidents come after federal cybersecurity agencies warned that Iranian hackers have been targeting water and wastewater systems in the United States. Last week, the FBI, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, and other federal organizations issued a joint advisory about threats aimed at critical infrastructure.
Authorities have not linked the recent attacks directly to any specific group. Investigators continue to examine technical evidence to determine the source of the activity.
Minnesota has reported the largest number of affected systems so far. State officials said more than 30 water systems experienced cyber incidents involving technology used to monitor and control equipment remotely.
Minnesota IT Services stated that being listed as impacted does not necessarily mean water service was interrupted. Instead, the designation means investigators confirmed malicious activity involving operational technology.
The agency also said there were no active requests for residents to change how they use drinking water. Officials stressed that most communities maintained normal operations despite the attacks.
One of the most notable incidents occurred in Braham, Minnesota. The city, located north of Minneapolis, temporarily asked residents to reduce water use while officials investigated an outage at its water plant.
Local authorities later confirmed the outage was caused by a cyberattack. The attackers reportedly shut down operating controls connected to the city’s well and water treatment facility. As a result, the community relied on water stored in its water tower for a short period.
City officials said the incident did not affect water quality. Service was restored after operators responded to the disruption.
Another attack affected Plymouth, Minnesota, a city of about 80,000 residents. Local officials announced that communication systems connected to water infrastructure had been restored by Tuesday afternoon following a cyber incident.
Cybersecurity experts have long warned that water utilities can be attractive targets for attackers. Many local systems operate with limited budgets and aging technology. As a result, some facilities may struggle to install the latest security updates or invest in advanced protection measures.
Experts say attacks on water systems can create concern among residents even when drinking water remains safe. Because these facilities provide essential services, disruptions can have a significant impact on communities.
Federal authorities have also pointed to a history of cyber activity targeting U.S. water infrastructure. In 2016, the U.S. Department of Justice charged a group of Iranian hackers for cyber operations that included an attack on a small dam near New York City.
The recent incidents have also sparked political debate. During a Cabinet meeting on Friday, President Donald Trump said Minnesota leaders shared responsibility for the cyberattacks. He did not provide evidence to support the claim.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz responded on social media, saying federal officials know who is responsible and noting that multiple states experienced similar attacks.
As investigations continue, federal and state agencies are urging water utilities to strengthen cybersecurity measures and closely monitor operational systems for unusual activity.
