Spider Man Brand New Day Box Office Tops 2 Billion
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has reached a major box office milestone. The film has now passed $2 billion in worldwide ticket sales after another strong weekend in theaters.
The latest result adds to the film's growing record. It also keeps the new Spider-Man movie ahead of several major hits at the same stage of their runs.
The film earned about $70 million in North America during its third weekend. That gives it the second biggest third weekend ever.
Only Star Wars: The Force Awakens had a better third weekend. That film made $90.2 million during its third weekend.
Brand New Day also moved ahead of two Avatar films. Avatar: The Way of Water made $67.4 million in its third weekend. The first Avatar earned $68.4 million.
The latest result shows that demand for the Spider-Man film remains strong. Many films see a sharp drop after their opening weekend. Brand New Day has instead kept a large audience in theaters.
After 17 days, the film has made $785.8 million in North America. That total puts it ahead of The Force Awakens at the same point.
The Force Awakens had made $742.2 million after 17 days. Avengers: Endgame had made $723.7 million.
That gives Brand New Day a lead of more than $43 million over the pace set by The Force Awakens.
The film could reach $800 million in North America within its next few days. The Force Awakens needed 23 days to pass that mark.
The comparison may become harder in the weeks ahead. Schools are starting to reopen in many areas. That could reduce weekday movie traffic and slow the film's pace.
Still, the current numbers are a major success. The movie is already one of the biggest releases in box office history.
Its global performance is even more notable. Brand New Day has now crossed $2 billion worldwide.
That makes it only the eighth movie ever to reach the $2 billion mark. The result places the film in a very small group of global blockbusters.
The milestone also puts it above the final worldwide total of Spider-Man: No Way Home. That film ended its run with about $1.912 billion.
The strong result gives the Spider-Man series another major global hit. It also shows the continued power of the character at the box office.
The film opened on July 31 and has remained a major draw through August. It has helped keep theaters busy during a month that has otherwise lacked many huge openings.
The film's success is also shaping the wider summer box office. While new releases have entered theaters, Brand New Day has continued to lead the market.
The Odyssey has also remained a strong performer. The film has helped keep movie theaters active while other new titles have struggled to match the biggest releases.
The coming weeks will show how long Brand New Day can maintain its pace. A slower weekday run could reduce its lead over past blockbusters.
Even so, the film has already achieved a rare result. Passing $2 billion worldwide puts it among the most successful movies ever made.
Its next target will be the final totals of other major global hits. The film still has time to add hundreds of millions of dollars before its theatrical run ends.
For now, the numbers point to another huge success for Spider-Man. A $70 million third weekend, a $785.8 million North American total and more than $2 billion worldwide have made Brand New Day one of the biggest box office stories of the year.
