Larry David Says Dershowitz Made a Deal With Devil
Larry David has spoken publicly about the end of his friendship with lawyer Alan Dershowitz. The comedian said Dershowitz made a “deal with the devil” when he became a lawyer for Donald Trump.
David and Dershowitz were once close friends and neighbours on Martha’s Vineyard. They spent time together for years and often visited each other’s homes.
Their friendship later fell apart over politics and Dershowitz’s legal work for Trump. The split became public after a heated meeting at a local shop in 2021.
Dershowitz later said David had called him “disgusting” during the meeting. He also said David refused to speak with him.
The former Harvard law professor described the incident in a 2022 interview. He said he had tried to greet David, but David walked away.
Dershowitz said he then asked David if they could talk. David refused and called him disgusting, according to Dershowitz.
David has now discussed the dispute in a new profile of Dershowitz. He said he does not often have confrontations in his own life.
“I have lots of confrontations on my show but rarely in life,” David said. He added that he usually confronts people only when he thinks he can handle the situation.
The comment was a reference to the dispute with Dershowitz. David joked about the event as the “Dershowitz dust-up.”
The former friends have also spoken about a painful family loss. Dershowitz’s son Elon died from a stroke last year at the age of 64.
Dershowitz said he was hurt that David did not contact him after his son’s death. David said he was beginning to feel sorry for Dershowitz, especially because of the loss.
David also said he regretted not reaching out at the time. He referred to a line from his comedy series Curb Your Enthusiasm.
“I think of nice things. I just don’t act on them,” David said.
However, David later contacted the publication again with a stronger view of Dershowitz’s political and legal choices.
David said he was reluctant to make harsh comments because Dershowitz had faced strong criticism and social rejection. He then said Dershowitz had brought much of that treatment on himself.
“He made a deal with the devil,” David said. He added that he believed the “devil” had not spoken to Dershowitz since Trump’s first impeachment trial.
Dershowitz has represented several high-profile clients during his long legal career. His past clients have included Trump, Jeffrey Epstein, OJ Simpson and Harvey Weinstein.
He was also part of Trump’s legal team during the president’s first impeachment trial in 2020. Dershowitz defended Trump during the Senate proceedings.
His political views have also changed in recent years. In April, Dershowitz said he was joining the Republican Party after many years as a supporter of the Democrats.
He also criticised the Democratic Party over its views on Israel. He called it the most anti-Israel party in US history.
Dershowitz has also faced a legal setback this year. In June, the US Supreme Court rejected his request to revive a $300m defamation case against CNN.
The case focused on CNN’s coverage of comments Dershowitz made while defending Trump. He argued that the network edited his words in a way that made him appear to have lost his mind.
The court’s decision ended his latest effort to bring the case back.
David’s latest comments show that the friendship remains deeply strained. While he expressed regret over not contacting Dershowitz after his son’s death, he also stood by his criticism of Dershowitz’s choices.
The dispute reflects a wider divide over Trump, politics and public life. For David, the former friendship now appears to remain tied to those disagreements.
