White House border official Tom Homan has denied claims that British political commentator Milo Yiannopoulos received special treatment after being deported from the United States just one day after his arrest by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Homan said Yiannopoulos was removed because immigration officials were carrying out a final removal order issued by an immigration judge. He said the deportation followed normal legal procedures and was not influenced by politics or public attention. Yiannopoulos, 41, was arrested by ICE in New Orleans before being deported to the United Kingdom the following day. His rapid removal raised questions because many immigration detainees spend days, weeks, or even months in detention before leaving the country. Homan said Yiannopoulos had overstayed what he believed was a visitor visa and failed to appear at an immigration hearing. According to Homan, an immigration judge issued a final order of removal on July 22 after Yiannopoulos did not attend the hearing. He said once ICE receives a final removal order from a federal immigration judge, the agency's responsibility is to carry out that order as quickly as possible. Homan rejected suggestions that Yiannopoulos received preferential treatment because of his public profile. He said the Department of Homeland Security is working to speed up deportations for everyone once legal orders are complete. He explained that ICE is trying to reduce the amount of time people spend in detention by arranging travel documents and flights more quickly. He said the goal is to remove people promptly after a final order so detention beds become available for other detainees. The Department of Homeland Security publicly announced Yiannopoulos's arrest shortly after ICE detained him in New Orleans. Officials later confirmed that he had been deported to the United Kingdom the next day. In a public statement, DHS said Yiannopoulos had violated US immigration law by overstaying his permission to remain in the country. The department said the administration is working to ensure that people who are in the United States without legal status leave the country through deportation or voluntary departure. Questions about the case also focused on conservative commentator Laura Loomer, who said she had alerted ICE that Yiannopoulos's immigration status had expired. Homan said ICE receives many tips from members of the public about possible immigration violations. He said Loomer may have contacted the agency, but added that the tip did not change the legal outcome of the case. He said the important point was that Yiannopoulos had already been ordered removed by an immigration judge, and ICE was simply enforcing that decision. Loomer and Yiannopoulos have publicly criticized each other in recent months after previously being political allies. Their dispute drew additional attention to the deportation case after Loomer claimed involvement in notifying immigration authorities. Homan also denied claims that the Trump administration targeted Yiannopoulos because of his political views or wanted to send a public message through the deportation. He said immigration enforcement decisions are based on legal status and court orders, not political affiliation. He added that ICE does not deport people because of their opinions or political beliefs. The case has sparked debate because Yiannopoulos was deported within a day of his arrest, while many other immigration cases involve longer detention periods before removal. Homan said the administration wants faster removals whenever legal requirements have been completed.
