Iran Releases US Citizen Trump Confirms Return
A dual American and Iranian citizen has left Iran after months of being unable to return home. US President Donald Trump announced that the woman was released and is now safe outside the country.
Trump shared the update on social media on Wednesday. He said the woman had been held since December 2024. He added that she was in good health after leaving Iran.
The president thanked Iran for what he described as a gesture of goodwill. He did not name the woman in his first public statement.
The announcement came on the same day that the United States carried out new military strikes on Iran. The timing drew attention because of the ongoing tension between the two countries.
Later, the woman was identified as Dena Karari. She holds both American and Iranian citizenship. Her lawyer, Jared Genser, confirmed that she had safely left Iran and was on her way back to the United States.
Genser shared the news on social media. He said Karari was safe and traveling home after many months of uncertainty. He also praised the efforts that helped secure her release.
According to Genser, the outcome followed continued work by the US administration. He said those efforts played an important role in bringing Karari home.
Karari traveled to Iran in 2024 to visit family members. During that visit, she was stopped from leaving the country. She remained in Iran after officials prevented her departure.
Reports from last year said she was first detained before later being released from custody. Even after leaving detention, she was still not allowed to leave Iran.
The reports also said Karari worked for an American technology company. In addition to her professional work, she operated a charity that supported children from low-income families in Iran.
Her situation changed again after fighting between Iran and Israel increased in 2025. The United States later joined military action against Iran during that conflict.
After those events, Iranian authorities charged Karari with espionage. The charge added to concerns about her ability to return home.
Her legal team continued to seek her release during that time. Supporters also called for efforts to bring her back safely.
The successful departure marks the end of a long period of uncertainty for Karari and her family. She is now expected to complete her trip to the United States.
Her case also highlights the challenges that dual citizens can face during times of political conflict. Relations between countries can sometimes affect people who travel for family or personal reasons.
The United States and Iran have had a difficult relationship for many years. Diplomatic ties remain limited, and cases involving detained citizens often become major international issues.
Governments sometimes hold discussions behind closed doors to secure the release of citizens. These efforts can take months or even years before an agreement is reached.
In this case, officials have not released full details about the discussions that led to Karari's departure. It also remains unclear whether any formal agreement was reached between the two countries.
Trump described the release as a positive step. His statement focused on Karari's safe departure and thanked Iran for allowing her to leave.
Genser also welcomed the outcome. He said he was pleased that Karari could finally travel home after many months away.
Genser is well known for representing people held in different countries. Over the years, he has worked on many international human rights cases involving detained individuals.
Karari's return is expected to bring relief to her relatives, friends, and supporters. Her case received attention because it involved both international politics and the rights of dual citizens.
Her release comes during a period of continued tension between Washington and Tehran. Even so, her safe departure may be seen as a rare humanitarian development during a difficult time.
As Karari returns to the United States, many questions remain about the events that led to her detention. Officials have not shared additional information, but her safe return marks an important moment for her family and those who supported her release.
