He said the NFL wants the honor to have more meaning for players, their families, teams and fans. Voting for the Pro Bowl will not change. Fans, players and coaches will each have one-third of the vote. The system will continue to help decide which players earn the honor. The AFC versus NFC game was once the main part of the event. The league moved to a fantasy football style draft in 2014. The AFC and NFC format returned in 2017. The Pro Bowl also moved away from Hawaii after the 2016 event. Hawaii had been the longtime home of the all-star game and was linked to the event for many years. The NFL last played a full tackle football Pro Bowl in 2022. The league then launched the Pro Bowl Games in 2023. The new event used flag football and skills contests. It was designed to offer a safer and more active way to showcase NFL stars. The format changed again last season. The Pro Bowl Games were moved to the Tuesday before the Super Bowl in San Francisco. Despite these efforts, the NFL has now decided to end the event in its current form. The league will instead place more focus on the Pro Bowl selection itself. The change also aims to make each selection more special. Players can use Pro Bowl honors as part of their career record. The honor can also have a role in contracts and other career matters. Under the new plan, a player who earns one of the 88 spots will keep that place even if the player later cannot attend the celebration. A replacement player will not take that Pro Bowl spot.
