Barnett was a junior running back for the William Jewell Cardinals. He became ill on the sideline during the first quarter of the Division II game against Fort Lewis College. The game took place at William Jewell’s campus in Liberty, Missouri. Liberty is about 20 miles northeast of Kansas City. Barnett had seizure-like symptoms during the game. The medical emergency happened at about 12:20 p.m. local time. Paramedics from the Liberty Fire Department arrived at the stadium and took Barnett to a local hospital. He was later pronounced dead.
